Youth Crisis/ Suicide

The suicide rate among young people ages 10-24 has increased from nearly 60% between 2007 and 2018. I recently received a call from a colleague about her niece’s recent suicide. She shared her niece informed some of their family members. She was depressed about a relationship. She felt rejected and confused because the individual she was dating no longer wanted to be involved in the relationship. She was 15 years old. 

 Young individuals struggle with social issues, including acceptance, bullying, sexual identity, self-esteem, and substance usage, resulting in suicide. Depression and other mood disorders untreated can lead to suicide.  Below are some of the signs regarding suicidal thought patterns:

• Depressed feelings:  Mood swings, anger
• Hopelessness: Isolation, avoidance
• Sleep Problems: Insomnia, sleeping more
• Excessive Sadness: Lack of acceptance,
• Recent trauma: A break up with a boyfriend, family disappointments, loss of a loved one

Depression and other mood disorders untreated can lead to suicide. Although the internet is an excellent source for information, it has also been utilized as an avenue to inflict malicious harm toward an individual. Cyber-bullying and posting damaging information on the internet have provided a negative outlet to hurt others. It is crucial young people have a positive environment to share their emotions. My colleague shared her niece did not tell them about the problems she encountered with her prior boyfriend, yet she committed suicide. Below are some preventive strategies to assist young people struggling with suicidal thoughts:

• Listening and provide support
• Make a safety plan
• Refer an individual to seek help (mental health counseling)
• Keep individuals safe from weapons.
• Seek assistance (911)

Prevention is an essential factor in suicide. Providing a safe and caring environment is vital to assist young people in managing their emotions.
